History of DIET Balangir

As the womb of teacher education programme Ramsay Guru Training school, Balangir has a rich history dating back to 1914, Established by Ramsay Guru, a Scottish missionary and a renowned educator. The training school initially provided teacher training to local youths, promoting education in western Odisha. During the British colonial era, it played a pivotal role in spreading education and empowering teachers in primary education.

Over the year in 1914 the institute was started as a primary teacher training school. It was upgraded to a middle school teacher training institute in 1924 and later on to secondary training School. After the adoption of the National Policy on Education 1986, a centrally sponsored scheme for the restructuring and reorganization of teacher education is being implemented since October, 1987. One of its components is establishment of District- Institutes of education and Training (DIETs). The institute was subsequently upgraded to DIET for Balangir district, becoming one of the 13 pioneering DIETs established across undivided district of Odisha in the education session 1989-90.

The DIET, Balangir has been recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Over the years, the institution expanded its infrastructure and responsibilities and become a hub Centre for the quality education of the district. Its alumni have made significant contribution to education in the state and beyond.

Vision

The vision and mission of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Balangir district aligns with the state and national level educational goals. The DIET plays a vital role in the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020).

As a district-level academic nodal institution, DIET’s primary functions include:

  • Pre-service and In-service Teacher Education: Conducting training programs for teachers to enhance their professional and leadership skills.
  • Curriculum and Material Development: Creating educational materials and resources to support teachers.
  • Evaluation and Monitoring: Assessing the quality of education in schools and providing feedback for improvement.
  • Community Engagement: Fostering partnerships with local stakeholders to promote education.
  • Resource Support: Serving as a resource center for teachers, providing academic and professional support.
  • Action Research: Facilitating research initiatives for teachers, educators and trainees.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Organizing training programs for teachers’ ongoing development.

Mission

NEP 2020 emphasizes the importance of DIETs in implementing policy recommendations at the district level. To achieve this, DIETs must transform into vibrant institutions of excellence within three years, developing competencies and altering work cultures.

    After successful completion of the pre-service programme the students are awarded with a Diploma in Elementary Education(D.El.Ed) degree certificate for their future teaching profession.
